A Little History

WE ARE A COUNTRY CHURCH, IN A QUAINT SETTING, WITH A 151 YEAR FOUNDATION.  OUR FOUNDERS WERE GERMAN EVANGELICAL AND REFORMED IMMIGRANTS WHO

WANTED THEIR CHILDREN RAISED KNOWING GOD.  DESCENDANTS' FAMILIES STILL ATTEND OUR CHURCH.  IF YOU, TOO,  WANT TO RAISE YOUR CHILDREN TO KNOW GOD, OR IF YOU WISH TO REAFFIRM YOUR FAITH, OR EVEN BEGIN A FAITH, JOURNEY, WE ARE HERE FOR YOU. 

IMMANUEL IS A WELCOMING AND FRIENDLY CONGREGATION AND WE ARE INVITING YOU TO VISIT!

OUR HISTORY

150 YEAR MEMBER OF THE HAMEL COMMUNITY

  1. Founded in 1870 as Immanuel "God With Us" Evangelical Protestant Congregation.
  2. Immanuel Cemetery was created with the first burial on December 26, 1871.
  3. 1872 The Sunday School was organized being held only in the summer
  4. In 1880 the congregation was incorporated under the name Immanuel Evangelical Church of Hamel, Illinois
  5. September 15, 1957 the cornerstone for the current church was laid.

While we follow our Search Process for clergy that God leads to us, we are blessed with a wonderful rotating Guest Worship Team:  Rev. Mary Beth Hartenstein, Lorin Cope, Rev. Nancy Brooks, and Rev. Michael Krewson.

Ruth Klenke

Church Administrative Assistant

Ruth Klenke is the Church Secretary. Anything that gets done around here, you can be sure that Ruth was asked for input. If you need help with church history, processes or procedures Ruth will be able to help you.

Lynn Reiter

Church Council President

Lynn is a retired teacher and her training and experience include management, and motivation.

She and fellow council members take very seriously their roles to provide

spiritual leadership in many ways, and monitor all business of the church.

Immanuel is God’s church, doing God’s work with hearts and hands – spreading God’s love.

Karen Cain 

Church Organist

Karen has been the organist for Immanuel United Church of Christ since 1995. She is an accomplished organist and has has several public performances.
